RYAM Forest Management (FM) Abitibi-West manages the forest and plans forest operations to supply the RYAM Lumber sawmills in La Sarre and Bearn, in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

The Abitibi-West FM group conducts forest operations as a timber supply guarantee holder for timber in Management Units (MU) north of La Sarre in Northern Quebec (MUs 085-51 and 085-62), and the MU near Rouyn-Noranda (MU 082-51). Under the former forest regime, the group was responsible for developing the General Forest Management Plan, which described and mapped management operations and the main infrastructure in the five-year plan.

As of April 1, 2013, under the new forest regime, the Quebec department of natural resources (Ministère des Ressources naturelles, MRN), now known as Ministry of Forest, Wildlife and Parks (Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs [MFFP]) is responsible for drafting the tactical integrated forest management plan. The MFFP is also responsible for developing the operational forest management plan (PAFIO) in collaboration with the local supply guarantee holders. Based on the PAFIO, RYAM Forest Management team schedules and conducts its annual forest operations in a responsible manner, including road construction, harvesting and transporting wood to the mills. RYAM Forest Management ensures that forest operations are conducted safely, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and with respect for the environment.

Certification

The territory managed by the Abitibi-West FM group has been certified under the National Boreal Standard (2004) of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) since 2005. It is the first public forest certified to FSC standards in Quebec.

RYAM Forest Management (FM) Témiscamingue group manages the forest and plans forestry operations to supply the RYAM Lumber sawmill in Bearn and the TKL woodchips plant in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

The Témiscamingue FM group conducts forest operations as a timber supply guarantee holder for timber in Management Units (MU) in Témiscamingue (MUs 081-51 and 081-52). Under the former forest regime, the group was responsible for developing the General Forest Management Plan, which described and mapped management operations and the main infrastructure in the five-year plan.

Matane

Matane group is responsible for supplying the Rayonier Advanced Materials Matane high-yield pulp mill in the Lower St. Lawrence (LSL) region. Although this group is not responsible for forest management, it plays an active role in forest certification on Lower St. Lawrence public land.

The team works directly with and chairs the region’s forest certification management group. Formed in 2011, the Corporation de gestion de la certification des territoires publics du Bas-St-Laurent is governed by a board of directors that includes representatives of all the Timber supply guaranty beneficiaries and of the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, who act as advisors. The governing body is an executive committee of the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. The Corporation has a coordinator who is responsible for working with all stakeholders and the auditors.

Gordon Cosens and Hearst Forests

RYAM’s Forest Management (FM) group in Kapuskasing is responsible for forest management planning and forestry operations on the Gordon Cosens Forest. RYAM FM  also has forest operations on the Hearst Forest which is managed by Hearst Forest Management Inc. (HFMI). Hearst Forest Management Inc. (HFMI) holds the Sustainable Forest License (SFL) for the Hearst Forest and is responsible for forestry planning on the Hearst Forest.

RYAM FM  is a shareholder in the HFMI co-op and maintains harvesting and consumption rights on wood harvested on the Hearst Forest. The Gordon Cosens and Hearst Forests supply conifer fibre to the paper mill and sawmill complex in Kapuskasing, the sawmill in Hearst, as well as other non-company owned mills in the region. The RYAM FM group ensures that its forestry operations are conducted in a manner which ensures the safety of its employees and the public while protecting the environment.

The RYAM FM group in Kapuskasing leads forestry planning in the Gordon Cosens Forest. The group is responsible for developing the ten-year Forest Management Plan (FMP) which includes a detailed description and mapping of logging and renewal operations and the development of planned road access. It also prepares the Annual Work Schedule (AWS) which identifies the location of operations scheduled for implementation during the year. The AWS includes information on the areas scheduled for harvest, road construction/maintenance, renewal, tending and protection operations.

Certification

The GCF has been certified under the National Boreal Standard of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) since 2003. It was the first public forest FSC certified in Canada. The Hearst Forest has been certified since 2011.

Martel, Romeo Malette, Abitibi River and Algoma Forests

RYAM’s Forest Management (FM) group in Chapleau, Timmins and Cochrane is responsible for forest management planning and forestry operations on the Martel and Romeo Malette Forests located in northeastern Ontario. RYAM FM also has forest operations on the Abitibi River and Algoma Forests.

RYAM FM is an Abitibi River Forest Management Inc. (ARFMI) shareholder.  ARFMI holds the sustainable forest license (SFL) for the Abitibi River Forest (ARF).  As a shareholder, RYAM has harvesting and consumption rights on wood harvested on the ARF.

RYAM FM is also a shareholder with Clergue Forest Management Inc. Clergue holds the sustainable forest license (SFL) for the Algoma Forest.  As a Clergue shareholder, RYAM has harvesting and consumption rights on wood harvested on the Algoma Forest.

The Martel Forest and Algoma Forest supply conifer fibre to RYAM Lumber’s sawmill in Chapleau. The Romeo Malette Forest and Abitibi River Forest supply conifer fibre to RYAM Lumber’s sawmill in Cochrane. These Forests are also an important source of supply for log products going to other non-company owned mills in the region. The RYAM FM group ensures that its forestry operations are conducted in a manner which ensures the safety of its employees and the public while protecting the environment.

RYAM Lumber sawmill in Huntsville and Rayonier Advanced Materials in Témiscamingue receive wood supply from the Nipissing and French-Severn forests. Those forests are also an important source of supply for log products going to other non-company owned mills in the region.

RYAM FM is a member of Nipissing Forest Resources Management Inc. (NFRM Inc.) and Westwind Forest Stewardship Inc. (WFSI) co-ops which manage the Nipissing Forest and French-Severn Forest respectively. NFRM Inc. and WFSI lead forestry planning and silviculture on their respective sustainable forest license (SFL) areas. Each group is responsible for developing the ten-year Forest Management Plan (FMP) which includes a detailed description and mapping of logging and renewal operations and the development of planned road access.  It also prepares the Annual Work Schedule (AWS) which identifies the location of operations scheduled for implementation during the year. The AWS includes information on the areas scheduled for harvest, road construction/maintenance, renewal, tending and protection operations.

RYAM FM manages its own logging operations on both forests ensuring that they are conducted in a manner which ensures the safety of its employees and the public while protecting the environment.

The French-Severn forest has been certified under the Great Lakes St-Lawrence standard of the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC®) since 2002. The Nipissing Forest has been certified to the same standard since 2003.
