North American Softwood Lumber Environmental Product Declaration

Environmental Product Declaration or EPD is a standardized tool to communicate the environmental performance of a product or system. Much like a brochure, an EPD is a multi-page document, which contains environmental performance information that is derived from a life cycle assessment (LCA). The kind of information typically included in an EPD addresses energy consumption, water consumption, global warming, waste and air emission, among other common environmental metrics – it’s the environmental version of a nutrition label.

The Canadian and American Wood Councils have produced a generic EPD for North American commodity wood products such as softwood lumber.
