We take care of the forests we depend on, for the benefit of all.
Forests are essential to humanity for the range of benefits, products and services they provide – clean water, oxygen, wildlife habitat, wilderness, carbon sequestration, recreational opportunities, timber and non-timber products and green energy. Our trees provide the raw ingredients, such as fiber, from which the company’s products are derived. Forests are more than trees and well-managed forests can provide a range of products and integral ecosystem services to meet society’s needs.
In the US, our plants consume more than 4 million tons of woodchips each year to produce our cellulose specialties products. They provide a market for more than 1 million acres of working forests throughout the Southeast, incentivizing the continued use of those lands for commercial forestry. These working forests provide vital wildlife habitat, aquifer recharge and improve surface water quality.
In Canada, the Forest Resource Management Group is there to guide the implementation of sustainable forest management on company forestry operations. Our goal is to sufficiently supply Rayonier Advanced Material’s manufacturing operations with quality, fully certified fiber at a competitive price.
Rayonier Advanced Materials holds long-term forest licenses on public lands in Ontario; in Québec, Rayonier Advanced Materials has tenure through wood supply guarantees. We also have privately owned land and buy fiber from other sources to meet the needs of our mills.
Prior to returning water to the environment, we treat it in our wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring that it meets or exceeds all state and federal water quality standards. At our US manufacturing facilities, we’ve taken steps to improve water quality including steps to reduce the color of the water from our Jesup, Ga., plant. In Jesup, we’ve invested more than $70 million since 2008 in technology and process improvements that have resulted in a more than 50 percent reduction in color.
Rayonier Advanced Materials also operates anaerobic wastewater treatment plants at manufacturing sites in Temiscaming and Matane, Québec; and Tartas, France.
Basically, anaerobic wastewater treatment is an innovation in the biological treatment of wastewater. The treatment enables us to remove organic pollutants, which are then converted by anaerobic microorganisms to biogas.
Our aim is to minimize fossil fuel consumption and maximize the use of green energy in our manufacturing facilities.
Cogeneration is a highly efficient means of generating thermal and electric energy simultaneously from the same energy source. At Rayonier Advanced Materials, cogeneration plants produce heat by burning biomass (pulping liquor, bark, shavings, sawdust, and sludge). The heat is used to produce steam for the pulping and papermaking processes. The steam also produces electricity by operating a turbine. This green electricity is either used internally or sold to utilities.
In the end, the biomass replaces fossil fuels to produce green steam and green electricity.
